Feeling Seen, Valued, and at Peace
“It does not matter where I am today. I always find a space where I can participate, feel welcomed, and simply be myself.”
The Moment They Were Experiencing
The residents of Sunrise at Silas Burke House come to activities with very different life experiences. Some maintain a high degree of physical and cognitive independence, while others face challenges related to mobility, memory, or the natural changes that accompany aging.
Each day can be different. There are days filled with energy and participation, and others when simply being present is already a meaningful accomplishment. Amid these changes, there is one deep need that remains constant: the desire to feel seen, respected, and valued as a person.
What They Were Looking For
Residents participate in the classes seeking well-being, companionship, and activities that bring meaning to their days. Yet beyond physical movement or relaxation, they are looking for something essential.
They long for spaces where they can feel safe, free from pressure to perform or meet expectations. Spaces where they can participate exactly as they are in that moment. They seek peace, connection, and opportunities to experience well-being in a way that is accessible, respectful, and supportive.
The Journey
During the Gentle Movement & Peaceful Presence sessions, each person is welcomed with acceptance and care.
Movements are adapted to individual abilities. Focusing on breathing becomes an invitation to slow down and return to the present moment. There is no comparison and no expectation. Each participant is free to engage in a way that best supports their needs.
Gradually, the atmosphere fills with calm. Bodies begin to relax, and facial expressions soften.
Even those living with memory-related challenges respond positively to the gentle rhythm of conscious breathing, mindful movement, and the sense of safety created during each gathering. The experience becomes more than a scheduled activity. It evolves into a space of presence, connection, and shared well-being.
What Changed
Over time, residents show a greater willingness to participate and connect with one another. Many leave the sessions feeling more relaxed, while others discover moments of peace that remain with them throughout the day.
Participation becomes more natural. Connections with others grow stronger, and perhaps most importantly, people experience the feeling of being recognized and valued exactly as they are.
What begins as a gentle movement and meditation class continues to evolve into an experience that enhances the quality of life of the entire community.
“Working with older adults, including those who need additional support in their daily lives or who face memory-related challenges, requires a rare combination of patience, compassion, and deep presence. Maritta brings all of that and more to every session.
Her gentle yoga and meditation classes are thoughtfully adapted to meet each resident exactly where they are, creating a safe and peaceful environment where everyone can participate and feel successful.
We have observed residents becoming more relaxed, more engaged, and more connected after the sessions. Even those facing memory challenges respond beautifully to the calming rhythm of movement and breath.
Maritta has an extraordinary ability to make every person feel seen, respected, and valued. Her work is not simply exercise; it is meaningful enrichment that truly enhances quality of life.”
Maritta’s Reflection
Through my work with older adults, I have learned that often the most valuable gift we can offer is not a technique or an activity; it is our presence.
When a person feels genuinely seen, respected, and accepted, something naturally begins to relax. There is no need to prove anything. There is no need to strive to be different. They can simply rest in the experience of being who they are.
I have found that the most meaningful moments often arise precisely in a space of calm, dignity, and human connection because well-being is not always about doing more. Very often, it is about feeling accompanied, valued, and at peace.
